The First Buddhist Monastery in China

    Located 12km east to the ancient capital city of Luoyang,henan Province,facing the Luo River in the south and sitting back to the Mang Hill in the north,is a temple,with red walls,exquisite palaces and a towering pagoda amid green pines and cypress groves,appearing solemn and silent.thes es the antiquity monastery of the White Horse Temple,the first Buddhist monastery in China,honored as"the Founder's Home"and "the Cradle of Buddhism in China".

    The White Horse Temple was built in A.D.68,the eleventh year of Yong Ping of Eastern Han was said that in A.D.64,the Seventh year of Yong Pong,Emperor Ming dreamed of a pearlescent gold deity,sex zhang tall,flying over the palace.on the next day,hetold what he dreamed to his ministers.Zhong Hu,one of the ministers,explained to him that the deity he dreamed of was probably the Buddha in India.Hearing that,the emperor sent a delegation of eighteen members headed by Cai Yin,Qin Jing and Wang Zun to seek for Buddhism in India.Having left Luoyang ,they crossed mountains and hills before finally arriving in what os now Afghanistan,where they studied Buddhist codes,got a portrait of Sakyamuni,and the Forty-two Sutras.When returning back,they invited two eminent monks to come with them,who were highly respected by Emperor Ming.In the next year.a temple was ordered to be built three li to the west of Luoyang City,which was entitled the White Horse Temple to remember the white horse which carried back the Buddhist suras.

    Though originated from India,Buddhism experienced its full development in China. After the building of the White Hose Temple,the two eminent monks moved into it to translate Buddhist codes and make sermons.It was in this temple that the first version of the Chinese Forty-two Sutras was produced.Ever since then,Buddhism exerted more and more influences on the life of the Chinese,and the which Buddhism spread to as far as Japan,Korea and Vietnam.More and more famous monks came to China and did translation work at the temple.The introduction of Buddhism into China not only greatly influenced the moral ethics,thoughts and cultures of the Chinse people,but also contributed a lot to the exchange of international cultures.Therefore it is no wonder that the White horse Temple os referred to as"the Founder's Home"and"the cradle of Buddhism"for such countries as Japjan,Korea and Vietnam.

    Facing the south,the White Horse Temple covers an atea of 200 mu.A stone menorial archway was new lyvuilt 150 meters in front of the gate, behind which is the Freeing Captive pool.Three stone arch bridges stand over the pool.In front of the gate of the White Horse Temple is a green belt of voer 20 mu.Crossing the square and going past the gate,you will see,in proper order,the Hall of Heavenly Kings,Hall of the Grteat Buddha,Hall of Mahavira,Hall of greeting,the Cool and Clear Terrace,and the Pavilion.On both sides of the Pavilion ate the Sutra House and the Magic Weapon House.The temple has a clear cut architectural structure,typical of the Chinese temples.

    The White Horse Temple has experienced vicissitudes of over 1900 years since its building.At present,under the guidance of Luoynag Religious Bureau,with the joint effort of all the monks,it has taken on a brand-new look,All the monks here abide by the Buddhist disciplines consciously,respect the okd and love the yong,and an atmosphere of cultivating morality and improving self knowledge had been formed making the temple the first monastery in China,worthy of the name.
